Putting On the Glitz: The Zafra Home Inspiration

The house was built in 1925- the height of the Jazz Age. This is my favorite era. The hair, the fashion, the music, the attitude of exuberance. It was a time of the Prohibition, speakeasies, bootlegging.

I’ve done a lot of work on experiential and themed events so I just did what I do best: Research and Moodboard. I pulled images from Pinterest, online inspiration sources, movie colorway websites . I knew I wanted to honor the house and the era from where it hailed from but add my own personal touch to the mix.

Arguably the most famous book of the era came to mind. My personal favorite, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (and more recently, a movie by Baz Luhrman). I could go on and on about how much I loved this book and movie. I pulled some tears from the movie and there it was: Daisy in all her beautiful glory. The Hero image for my inspiration. I must say- this is not a character reference. She was in fact, not the the most admirable in the novel. Not many of the characters were! Moving on…

“Daisy was young and her artificial world was redolent of orchids and pleasant, cheerful snobbery and orchestras which set the rhythm of the year, summing up the sadness and suggestiveness of life in new tunes.”

-F. Scott Fitzgerald “The Great Gatsby”

I decided I wanted my designs to embody elegance, femininity and exotic details while still embracing old world charm.
I want every room to have something interesting, conversation pieces.

When working with clients on concepts, I always ask for 3 key words. These words are used as an overarching thematic for the room, house, collection, etc..

In my case we have 4 words:
Old World. Exotic. Fresh. Elegant

At the time of my Moodboarding process, I was very inspired by Photographer @jamiebeck.co . She has an incredible gift for capturing beautiful intimate details. I also love her play with light, shadows and composition. You’ll find two of her pieces from her “Isolation Creation” series here. #isolationcreation

Jamie’s florals seems to align really well with with the look and feel I was going for while adding that delicious bit of color saturation.
